PERMATANG PAUH, Aug 26 — Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has won the Permatang Pauh by-election with a massive majority of 15,671 votes, topping the other two candidates in the count in all polling centres.

The opposition leader’s thumping victory of 31,195 votes to 15,524 garnered by the Barisan Nasional’s Datuk Arif Shah Omar Shah was achieved despite just 65.25% of voters casting their ballots compared with 81.2% during the March 8 general election.

Third candidate Hanafi Mamat of Kelantan-based Parti Keadilan Insan Malaysia (Akim) received 92 votes and lost his deposit.

Former MP Datuk Seri Dr Wan Azizah Ismail’s majority in the March general election was 13,398 votes, meaning Anwar has succeeded in increasing PKR’s majority. Earlier exit polls by both PKR and BN had not foreseen such a huge majority.

Anwar thanked everyone who contributed to his campaign after the returning officer had made the official announcement of his victory and proceeded to meet an estimated 50,000 supporters who had gathered outside the Tuanku Bainun Teachers Training Institute counting centre.

Appearing as if in pain but still smiling, the 61-year-old former deputy prime minister walked up and waved to the thousands around him, who began to sing the national anthem “Negaraku” and also shouted “Merdeka” repeatedly.

Earlier, Arif Shah had defiantly claimed that it was not a defeat.

“At least we know that Permatang Pauh still gives us support of 15,000 votes,” he said, insisting that his goal was always to win, not just reduce the margin of defeat, which he also failed to do.

He blamed his defeat on voters being attracted to the opposition’s “propaganda, promises and innuendoes”.

The BN’s campaign chief, Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak, graciously congratulated Anwar on his victory and called on him to “contribute to the country’s wellbeing and respect healthy democratic principles”.

“As I said from the outset, we were the underdogs,” he said. “His votes are similar to his wife, just an increase of 847 votes while BN votes slipped by 1,426. We will review our weaknesses.”

Wan Azizah had vacated the seat on July 31 to make way for her husband Anwar to contest in the by-election in what was thought to be a mere formality.

Anwar was barred from political office until April 14 this year, missing the March 8 general election by a hair. Wan Azizah held the seat for three terms and was said to be his proxy.

Anwar had been a hugely popular MP in the constituency before her, from 1982 until his high-profile sacking from the BN government in 1999 following Sodomy 1 and accusations of corruption that landed him in prison for six years.

The decision to run in Permatang Pauh came after allegations of sodomy by former aide Saiful Bukhari Azlan which had resulted in the former deputy prime minister's arrest on July 16.

Anwar was charged in court for Sodomy II on Aug 7, but unlike a decade ago, he was released on bail and proceeded to begin his campaign immediately in Permatang Pauh even though nomination was on Aug 16.

One day before nomination, Saiful swore on the Quran in the Federal Territory mosque that his sodomy claims were true.

Perodua today introduced its facelifted Myvi, and the freshened up hatchback features a decent number of revisions and refinements, all of which should help to keep the quarter-million volume seller a winner.

New face - it's a meatier front.

Exterior-wise, the car gets a minor style reworking - at the front, there's a new, beefier looking nose section courtesy of a new hood, with corresponding grille, logo and front bumper in tow.

At the rear, there's a new, wider bumper and the styling of the two reflectors on it have been revised. Also, the rear lamp assembly now features the use of LEDs. The car also features the use of new glass, which offer improved ultraviolet rejection, with up to 91% reduction.

Georgetown and Melaka just became Unesco world heritage sites

KUALA LUMPUR, July 8 — Malaysia's two oldest cities — Georgetown and Malacca — have finally been listed as World Heritage Sites after 7 years of campaigning at the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (Unesco), which gave the status yesterday.

Its Paris-based World Heritage Council met in Quebec, Canada and confirmed the listings which will see historical and cultural properties in both cities to be listed on the Unesco World Heritage List.

Penang Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng welcomed the announcement, "This is great news for Georgetown. We have to maintain our heritage and history and the state government intends to just that."

Former Chief Minister Tan Sri Dr Koh Tsu Koon said the success in the bid is a boost to multiculturalism and tourism for Malaysia.

Rainbow Waterfall

Not far from the foot of Gunung Tapis, is the Rainblow Waterfall where rainbow colours can be seen through the flow of the waters when the sun shines. It takes about an hour from the foot to reach the pool to watch the colour play of nature.

Gunung Tapis

It stands majestically in front of you as you take the laterite route towards it. Strong and imposing, it takes two days and two nights to go up and get back from this mountain, which is about 16km from Sungai Lembing town.

Charas Caves

Located some 15km from the town centre, this cave is popular for the huge Buddhist statue that lies reclining and for its suitability for climbing activities. Within the Kenau Valley, this is as good as nature can get as one realises how green this place is and how beautiful the sights are as one climbs higher off the ground.

Tin Mine Tunnels

There are many tin mine tunnels in this area, which had the world’s deepest mines at one time. However, for safety reasons, only 10 tunnels are open for visitors to view.

Panorama Hill

This is one of the most beautiful places on Earth as watching the sunrise here is akin to experiencing the most tranquil moment in life. There are signages to show visitors the way up the hill that is 291m above sea level.

Sungai Lembing Museum

There is so much of history in Sungai Lembing and if one has a week or two, then it would be good to walk through any one of the tunnels that would take you into another world. However, it would also suffice if one has some two to three hours to walk around the museum that once served as the home of the British representative here. Find out how it became the first duty-free town in the late 19th Century.

Mee Jawa

When in Sungai Lembing, make a beeline for the mee jawa served here by Javanese traders. The mee jawa here is popular and many folks in Kuantan think nothing of making the 40-minute ride to buy some home or even having it on the spot! Look out for the two rows of shops in the middle of town and head for the mee jawa stall run by Warisah Junus.

Town Centre

The one thing about Sungai Lembing that is quaint and reminds you of a small town in Europe is how the town is divided by a row of majestic trees. A heritage, they are the signature sights that tell visitors they have arrived at the town centre of this beautiful and historical place. Look out for the cinema and many attractions in this place that are unspoilt by time and development.

Police Station

Need directions? Assistance? Climb the stairs that leads to the blue and white building on top of a knoll in the town and you will find friendly police personnel who will help you in any way possible. Ask for directions to the 100-year-old suspension bridge, the traditional Jamek Mosque and the hot springs nearby.

Spain is one of the European country that I have yet to set foot on it. It is one of the country on top my list if I will to go Europe for my year end holidays. Two things come to my mind when I think about Holidays in Spain.

One of them is definitely relate to football, the Spanish La Liga, I would love to watch live game between two of the giant Spanish football team, Real Madrid and Barcelona.

The other is off course Bull Fighting which originates from Spain back to 711 A.D. . Millions watched the bullfight each year. How I can I miss it when I am there.

It is going to be once in a lifetime chance if i am able to make it possible. If I am going to Spain, there are few places that I plan to visit such as Sevelle, Granada and Malaga.

The Ninth Edition of the Langkawi International Maritime and Aerospace (LIMA) 2007 Exhibition began in this tourist island today with a spectacular airshow at the Langkawi International Airport.

The airshow saw the British Royal Air Force’s Red Arrows performing dare-devil stunts, “Suryakiran” aerobatic team from the Indian airforce and Royal Malaysian Air Force fighter jets displaying aerial manoeuvres and formations.

The displays were witnessed by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi, Deputy Prime Minister and Defence Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak, foreign and local dignitaries.

Abdullah and Najib will witness signings of several sale and purchase agreements for maritime and aerospace apparatus today apart from witnessing the delivery of six Russian-made Sukhoi jet fighter to the Malaysian government.

This year’s LIMA has attracted the participation of 450 defence industries companies from 20 companies to showcase their products and latest aerospace and maritime technologies.
The five-day LIMA is divided into two segments, with the aerospace component at the Mahsuri International Exhibition Centre in Padang Matsirat, and the Maritime segment at Awana Porto Malai.

Eighty aircraft and 71 ships, including 32 navy and coast guard patrol vessels, are taking part in the exhibitions restricted to only trade visitors from today till Thursday.

They will be opened to the public on Friday and Saturday from 10am to 5.30pm. LIMA ends on Saturday.

Double Triump! Williams and Team Pindar in high spirits as champions of the Monsoon Cup 2007 and the World Match Racing Tour Champion of 2006/07

Kuala Terengganu, 2 December 2007 – The World Match Racing Tour season 2006/2007 witnessed a thrilling finish as Briton Ian Williams of Team Pindar defeated four-time World Match Racing Tour champion Dato’ Peter Gilmour and Team PST 3-1 in a gripping final to win the 3rd Monsoon Cup.

Gilmour and Williams got to the finals by beating Hansen, and Paolo Cian of Team Shosholoza respectively. In the petit final, Hansen defeated Cian 2-1 in a close battle to claim the final spot on the podium today.

The double-victory was a remarkable achievement for Williams, coming as he did from the verge of elimination in the preliminary round robin stage.

The final saw a close battle between Williams and Gilmour, with victory for Williams in the Monsoon Cup coming after his successful clinching of ISAF World Match Racing Tour Championship title 2006/2007, after yesterday’s semifinal win over Paolo Cian and Team Shosholoza.

The prestigious Monsoon Cup trophy together with the RM250,000 champions prize money was presented to Team Pindar by Prime Minister of Malaysia Dato’ Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi, with runners up Team PST walking away with RM150,000, whilst 2nd runners up Bjorn Hansen and Team Apport.Net received RM100,000.

“It was fantastic to beat such a tough and experienced competitor such as Peter Gilmour to win the Monsoon Cup title today. Although we won the World Match Racing Tour Championship title yesterday, this win validated us again as the World Champions”, said Williams.

Gilmour held the edge over Williams as he had defeated the eventual champion in the round robin competition on the opening day. “My team did a great job out there today. Unfortunately, we made too many mistakes and we got punished. Williams sailed cleanly and smartly, and he is a worthy champion of the Monsoon Cup”, said Gilmour.

Williams opened the final of a race to three wins by winning the first race. Gilmour rebounded immediately, leveling the score at 1-1, only to see Williams storm back with a strong showing to bag the next two races, and with it victory in the Monsoon Cup 2007 with a 3-1 scoreline.

WORLD No 1 Roger Federer defeated retired US legend Pete Sampras yesterday for the second straight time in three days at the Clash of Times exhibition match at Malawati Stadium.

Both men held serve to take the first set to a tie-break with the Swiss maestro inching ahead when Sampras hit a forehand into the net.

The American hit back to bring the tie-break back on serve but Federer showed why he is currently number one when he hit a scorching forehand winner down the line for his second break to bring the score to 7-6.

Serving for the set, Federer hit a winning backhand volley to wrap up the first in 41 minutes.

It was a similar affair in the second set which also went to a tie-break before Federer dug deep to run out the eventual winner 7-5.
"I had a taste of what the best is tonight and I think Roger has that extra gear," Sampras said at a post-match conference alongside Federer.

"He has good volleys and he has this little backhand flick that honestly, I have never seen before... it's something that I didn't have."

Federer was equally full of praise for Sampras whose trademark booming serve earned him the nickname "Pistol Pete."

"I am really, really impressed by the way he's been playing," said Federer.

"He's got the most incredible serve you know," he said. "I can't read it, he serves it to the line, he serves harder than me."

The two met only once on the ATP Tour, in the fourth round of Wimbledon in 2001 when Federer defeated the American in five sets.

The defeat ended Sampras' remarkable reign at the All England Club.

Sampras, now 36, retired from professional tennis in 2002.

The pair were playing a one-off match here as part of Malaysia's 50th anniversary Merdeka celebrations.

The 26-year-old Federer won the first match played in Seoul on Tuesday, beating the former World No 1 6-4, 6-3 in 61 minutes.

The organisers of the “Clash of Titans” between three-time French Open tennis champion Rafael Nadal and Wimbledon semi-finalist Richard Gasquet have given an assurance that the match will be held as scheduled at the Malawati Stadium in Shah Alam on Nov 20.

They announced yesterday that both players would be on the same flight from Shanghai to Kuala Lumpur on Nov 19 after their participation in the ATP Tennis Masters Cup.

The match is one of the three events of the Malaysia Independence Tennis Festival, which also features the “Clash of Times” between Pete Sampras and Roger Federer on Nov 22 in Shah Alam and the Malaysian Open ATP Challenger Series tournament at the National Tennis Centre in Kuala Lumpur from Nov 17-25.

The chief executive officer of First Events Promotions Sdn Bhd, Adlin Zabri, said: “The Clash of Titans and the Clash of Times are both 100% confirmed. The players are coming to Malaysia. In fact, they will be in Malaysia in a few days' time.

“Preparations for the events are progressing very well. This is Nadal’s first appearance in South-East Asia and it is great that Malaysia are the hosts. We are very thankful to the Ministry of Youth and Sports, the Lawn Tennis Association and the National Sports Council for all of their support.”
